Wood pellets are the fuel of the future.
Being a key part of the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive, there are measures in place to help more and more people make the switch to this renewable source of fuel. It burns far more efficiently than other fossil fuels and comes from renewable sources. It sounds like a win-win option and, in essence, it is.
In fact, there are very few downsides to pellets as a means to heat your home and water. The one thing you do need to watch out for though is dust.
The way pellets are made means that have a very hard exterior and a softer inside. If the hard shell is cracked or broken, the softer, dustier insides can spill out.
On its own, that’s no great problem. But as this dust accumulates it can get thrown into the boiler when you put in a shovel or scoop of regular pellets.
Dust doesn’t burn in the same way as the pellets and can get clogged in the boiler and cause problems. This either means you need to have your boiler cleaned and serviced on a regular basis or the lifespan of your boiler will be significantly reduced.
Either way it reduces the efficiency savings and environmental impact of choosing pellets as a fuel.
So, what can you do?
There are a few options.
First, switch to using a low-dust pellet fuel source such as that offered by the Wood Pellet Delivery Company. Our pellets are specially treated so that they produce ten times less dust than conventional pellets.
In an average order of five tons, there could be as much as 50kg of dust. In our deliveries that is reduced to less than five.
In order to create less dust, it is also a very good idea to use a 10mm rubber mat in your fuel store or delivery area.
This mat absorbs the impact of the delivery and weight of ensuing falling pellets, meaning less dust is created in the first place. Make sure your mat is in good condition and placed directly under the delivery in order to offer the best protection to your pellets.
It is also highly recommended that you clean your pellet store on a regular basis. This should be at least every two years or after every five deliveries, whichever is sooner. This way you can remove excess dust and help preserve your boiler for years to come.
By doing all the above you can limit your boiler’s dust intake and also help to boost the efficiency of your pellet burn. A cleaner load of pellets with little to no dust will burn hotter and for longer, meaning it costs less to heat your home.
