Ordering wood pellets by the bag vs Ordering wood pellets by the ton
If you have done your research and invested in a wood pellet burner to heat your home then there is a reasonable chance that there were two main factors in your decision. One is price and the other is the environment.
The price is important because wood pellets offer a very efficient and affordable way of heating your home over the years. Invest in a burner and heating system and you could be looking at up to two decades of affordable central heating.
Forming part of the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) you may also be eligible for subsidies by choosing to use pellets to heat your home.
A Renewable Fuel Source
The fact that wood pellets are part of the RHI also speaks of their benefit to the environment. Unlike gas, coal and oil heating systems, a pellet burner uses fuel from renewable sources. Biomass can be regrown and replaced, unlike the limited amount of fossil fuels.
Sourcing and harvesting biomass fuel is also significantly less destructive and damaging to the environment. Just think about the difficulties of obtaining gas these days and the furore surrounding fracking and you’ll know what we mean.
So, with these two key concerns in mind, we come to the issue of how best to buy your pellets. The two main ways of doing so are in bags from a specialist store or supplier or in large-scale deliveries.
Buying in bags is more convenient in terms of storage. You don’t need to have a large storage space and you can pick up bags as and when you need them. Buying smaller amounts in bags is also good way of protecting the pellets and making sure they don’t break up too much and create too much harmful dust. If you have a burner that is only for occasional use, then buying in bags might be a good idea.
However, buying in small amounts is also more expensive. As with almost any consumer good, the more you buy the better value you can get. Bulk buy wood pellets and you’ll be getting much more bang for your buck than buying bags.
Similarly, buy in bags and you’re more likely to run out. Pellets can only really be bought at some suppliers, so it’s not like you can pop out to the nearest shop to pick some up if you run out.
Getting large bulk orders means fewer trips out, less petrol and time wasted, and more convenience. And when you’re running low, simply pre-arrange your next bulk order so you always have pellets in.
If you’ve bought and installed a wood pellet burner because it can save you money and save the environment at the same time, then ordering wood pellets by the ton is probably the best way to keep those two principles intact.
