Efficient, Affordable and Environmentally Friendly
Wood pellets are an efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly fuel source. If your home is well insulated and your pellet burner is properly maintained, you can easily keep your property warm and toasty all winter with just a small investment in fuel.
However, in order to get the most out of your wood pellets, you need to ensure they’re properly stored. Keep your pellets incorrectly and moisture will soon corrode the product, causing it to burn less efficiently or even fail altogether.
To help you get the most out of your high quality wood pellets, we’re taking a look at how you can keep your fuel safe and dry in even the worst of winter weather.
Where to store your bulk wood pellets?
Ideally, you should store your wood pellets somewhere inside. Keeping pellets inside helps to protect them from the elements and prevents rain, wind and damp from corroding the pellets over time.
The best place to keep your wood pellets is in a garage, shed or dry basement. Before you store your pellets, take a look around the space to check for any wet or damp patches.
If you find any, use thick plastic sheeting to protect your pellets or rearrange your storeroom so the pellets can be kept in a different spot.
Preparing your storeroom
If the floor of your storeroom is damp, or if the space is prone to flooding, you’ll need to try and elevate the pellets while they’re in storage. Getting your pellets off of the ground will protect them from damp and help ensure your pile of pellets is in great conditions from top to bottom.
If you have some old wood pallets, you could place these on the floor and then cover them in plastic to prevent pellets spilling through the gaps. Alternatively, see if you can find a large, waterproof container and have your wood pellet supplier pour the fuel straight in.
Keeping pellets outside
In some cases, keeping wood pellets inside just isn’t possible. If you don’t have any spare space in your garage or shed, or if you don’t have a garage or shed to start with, you may have to keep your wood pellets outside.
Wherever possible, try to protect your pellets from rain and damp. You could build a small roof to cover the pellets and prevent the worst of the winter weather from getting to them, or you could use a thick plastic cover to keep your mound of pellets dry.
Whichever method you use, you’ll need to check on your pellets regularly during the winter months to ensure no leaks are getting through your protective layers. Properly storing your wood pellets will help you make the most of this innovative and unique fuel source.
