What are biomass pellets?
The revolution in home heating is here. We all know that we can’t continue to use the same fuels to heat our homes and water and fuel our power stations. Climate change is a reality that we all have to face, but even if you take this out of the equation, the fact remains that fossil fuels will soon run out. That’s why we need alternative and sustainable fuels to help keep us warm and our appliances working.
One of the most likely to take over the mantle of fossil fuels, in that it is already being adopted across the world, is wood pellets. You may or may not have heard about wood pellets already, but there is a lot of confusion about what they are, where they come from and what they can be used for. Which is why we are here to clear things up.
What are wood pellets?
Wood pellets are a type of bio fuel made from compressed organic matter. Pellet fuel can be made from various types of organic matter, such as food waste, but wood pellets are made from lumber and wood off cuts that are processed into small pellets. These are then used in burners and boilers to create heat for central heating systems and hot water.
What are pellets used for?
There is a wide range of pellet stoves and burners available, many of which can be integrated within larger heating systems.
Pellets are extremely dense and produce a minimal amount of moisture, which means they can be burned with a high level of efficiency, and the fact they come from renewable sources makes them even less damaging.
Pellets are also increasingly being used in larger scales systems, fuelling power stations to create energy for large areas.
At a domestic level, however, once you have converted to a pellet burner system, you can rely on efficient, clean and renewable energy for years to come.
