What are the advantages of using biomass?
Biomass is organic matter from plants and animals. Energy from the sun is created in plants through the process of photosynthesis and transferred to the animals that use them as a food source. This means that biomass is a great source of fuel, either in its original plant state or in the form of manure.
There are a number of key benefits and advantages of using biomass fuel, which we are going to look at in more detail.
Renewable
Perhaps the main advantage of using biomass fuel is that it comes from a renewable source. Crops and plants can be grown using a mixture of sunlight and water, both of which can be found in plentiful supply. Biomass can be grown, harvested and regrown over the lifecycle of the plant source, making it completely renewable.
Carbon neutral
Another of the main advantages is that because biomass is essentially drawn from plant growth, it is more or less carbon neutral. That’s because plants suck CO2 out of the atmosphere as they grow. Any CO2 that is produced during burning has already been offset by the amount of CO2 they have consumed during growth.
Cost
Biomass fuels do not require extensive mining or refining, which means the process of production is far cheaper. These reduced costs are reflected in the lower costs of biomass fuel compared to the more difficult fossil fuels.
Availability
There is a huge range of biomass fuel sources available all over the world. They just need to be planted, grown and harvested. This means the global distribution of wealth is far more even than with the current network of fossil fuel suppliers.
As you can see, there are some excellent reasons for making the change to biomass wood pellets. Here at The Wood Pellet Delivery Company, we specialise in providing some of the highest quality biomass fuel in the UK. Our pellets are treated to reduce dust, meaning they burn cleaner and more efficiently than some other biomass fuels – another big advantage.
