An open wood-burning fire may sound cosy but it involves burning fossil fuel. When you use a biomass boiler to burn pellets for heat, your energy output becomes ‘carbon neutral’, to the extent that biomass boilers have an efficiency rating of 90 per cent. That compares to a rating of just 5 per cent for an open fire.
